Given the current COVID situation, we plan to run an online course for our computer networks lab using NetSim. Students should be able to run from their homes while the faculty can also teach from their residence. Can you give me idea on how this can be set up using NetSim? And also what would be a good set of experiments/exercises for such a course? Thank you

We are able to work on NetSim from our homes since NetSim support have also provided us access to their cloud servers for licenses. It is really convenient during this difficult times.
They are also providing access to their cloud servers to their existing customers. This was not available before and I think it is a special measure due to COVID.
So in our college, we are able to work on NetSim from our homes.
I dont know about PPT slides but NetSim itself has individual PDFs for each of the labs. These documents have the Introduction / theory, network set up, parameter settings, results and inference.
One draw back is that the theory is in para form and not available as diagrams with bullet points.

We were able to get NetSim up and running through their cloud servers quite easily. The documentation and videos were very helpful. Thank you.
The next question is how to assess students lab performance? There is no direct assessment option available in NetSim.
One option is to ask students to email their “experiment” or “configuration” files. These can be opened by the instructor locally with NetSim and checked for correctness.
Another option is to just do a zoom/skype call and ask the student to explain/program with NetSim.
Any idea if there there ‘cloud’ license servers that we can connect to for NetSim? We are finding it difficult to run/monitor the license server in our university?
Yes they do have access via the cloud for licensed users. Just write to them for access.
Hello Sai - how is access to uses given is we run NetSim via AWS. Would it be controlled through AWS or through NetSim?
In Universiti Teknologi Petronas, Malaysia students use NetSim via the cloud servers. Very convenient option
A little late response, but thank you all for this information. Our students are now able to access from their homes via the cloud license servers.
By cloud servers do you mean it would the ‘private’ cloud of the university or would it be the ‘NetSim’ cloud provided by them?
Both options are provided. You can run it on ‘your’ cloud (university’s private cloud) or you can access their (NetSim’s) cloud. It might be better to access through their cloud - no effort will be required from your end.
Thank you Sujatha. Yes, we plan to use the OEM cloud licensing option since is really easy to use. Only constraint is that continuous internet connectivity is required.
Can someone please let me know what all lab courses can NetSim be used for? Apart from Computer Networks, can it be used for Wireless Communication, Mobile Communication etc?
Yes, it can be used for different Under grad and Graduate courses in the topics you mention like Fundamentals of Networking, Advanced Computer Networks, Wireless Comm., Mobile comm. etc, and some specialized courses like Software-defined networking, IoT, 5G etc.

Because the different technology libraries built on a single foundation NetSim libraries work very well together. We use NetSim widely in our lab for teaching and for R & D in wireless communication and networking. There is a wide range of examples and experiments to choose from.
