For good sterilization of DNA-contaminants is a UV-C-lamp useful (be careful with your eyes and colleagues and plastics) and a 4M-Solution of NaOH. You wash everything in contact to your samples (caution, very corrosive, try at a small place of equipment, for that your table or pipette doesn´t dissipate) and buy, of course, sterile, PCR-clean Tubes.

In the case of pipettes, you can usually disassemble the parts entering in contact with the sample and either wash them with NaOH and UV-irradiate, or autoclave (check with the manufacturer first).

Out of curiosity, why would you need to sterilize the gel electrophoresis unit?

Thank you for the helpful reply. The unit has not been in use for a long time and it was not properly cleaned prior to storage. I am only planning to clean and sterilize the non-electrical parts.
