Besides finding a dataset, it is important to decide which type of data mining tasks you do want to perform: Market basket analysis? Classification? Clustering?
If you are still not an expert in Data Mining, it is a good idea to understand what these tasks can do (you don't need to know, in detail, how they work, but it is a good idea to know what kinds of problems these tasks can solve)
I am learning data mining. To explore data, it is obvious that we need to build problem specific data sets which actually help us to find some solutions. Being a horticulture a vast subject, I am looking at country and states in India. Starting with production, finance and growth. I am more interested in what data reveals in the course of time.
The first thing you need is to stablish what you want to discover. The dataset structure deeply depends on that.
For instance, if you want to discover about what climatic factores most affect the production level and quality, you will build a dataset that lists production volume and climatic factors. However, if you want to find out what kind of plagues are related with what kinds of cultures and regional aspects, you will include data that describe such conditions.
There is no such a thing as "creating a huge and single dataset that includes all the factors that are related with your domain of study". And, even if you had such a dataset, you still would have to ask yourself what you want to discover, so you would choose about clustering, association, classification, anomaly detection and so on.
The first step to find a solution is to have a clear understanding of the problem. So, state your problem in a single line, like "What are the climatic factors that affect the production levels of beet, cucumber and lettuce in the period of 2010 and 2015?".
A clear research question will give a clear north to direct your efforts!
So, again, first of all, decide what you want to discover, than find your data sources, combine them to build your dataset and then start mining!
