If you only need leaf cover and not leaf area index (LAI), you can use zenithal photographs. In this case, you don't need a fish eye.
If you want to asses LAI, fish eye is not essential. You can target the sample with the magic angle of view of 57.5°. This angle is directly linked to LAI.

Thanks for your answer! Could you explain a bit more about the angle? (I'm not familiar with these kinds of techniques) Do you mean taking a picture with a normal lens at the angle of 57 degrees from the horizontal plane, or is the 57 degrees a specification of the lens you need to use?
