Thyrinteina arnobia (Lepidoptera: Geometridae) is the most important Lepidoptera defoliator of eucalyptus in Brazil. I would like to receive information on this insect feeding on eucalytpus or on any other plant.
Thyrinteina arnobia has been reported in Costa Rica feeding on Quercus oleoides (Fagaceae) and Vismia baccifera (Hypericaceae). Interesting to know that in Brazil is a pest on Eucaliptus. What´s going on in Brazil ? The information of T. arnobia is present in this link http://janzen.sas.upenn.edu/Wadults/resultsexpressNAME.lasso
If I am not wrong it one pest with records dating back from the 70's or 80's...It sounds like it is a generalist, right? Feed on oaks (lots of tannins) and also on Vismia (has latex?). Very interesting indeed!
In the last two years we had an outbreak of Thyrinteina arnobia that reached hundreds of hectares of eucalyptus plantations.
The interesting point about this outbreak is the fact that it happened in an area with good soil and rain. The difference is that we had an unsual raining season (low) in the last two years. Since we plant eucalyptus clones that has more superficial roots, we believe that the drought stressed the trees and favored this insect.
