Independent scholarship is generally and broadly defined as "basic or applied research without affiliation(s) to any college, university or public and private research institutes" (e.g., please google "Ronin Institute"). There are other definitions but most revolve around this idea.
to be independent is an advantage to risk statements which contradict conventional views. Progress doesn't be expected with quoting other authorities (this only uses your scientific carrier, though), but to say the opposite - with good arguments.
Higher education and research institutes have Human Subjects Institutional Review Boards, to validate plans for research employing human subjects, and ensure that they do not come to harm. Independent research presumably has no avenue for this kind of peer review, which can make independent research problematical.

Disciplinary research is derived from academic divisions into various disciplines. Each discipline has its academic community that consists of professional society, disciplinary journals and society members. The academic community has the tools to accept or reject certain types of research. All this is lacking in independent research that is not affiliated with an academic institution.
I know many good researchers who are not affiliated with research-oriented institutions.
