Never attempt to artificially create salinity in a normal soil, since it is not realistic and does not represent natural saline soil and the results would not be reliable nor acceptable scientifically. Instead, collect naturally occurring saline soil for experimentation.
The occurrence of salinity does not depend solely on Na and Cl ions. Therefore, really you may not be able create artificial salinity by adding NaCl. Electrical Conductivity measures the total ionic nature.
Thank U Samaraweera for your apt scientific illustration to explain further, the futile attempt of creating artificial salinity which is totally unscientific and unholistic. I wish Mr. Zaikir would refrain from his research proposal to create artificial salinity in soils.
According to the equation of K=0.064EC in wich K is the percent of salinity and EC based on ds/m you can calculate the percent of NaCl that you need insert in 10 kg soil.
Yes , I agree , you can create soil salinity artificially , but as very rightly said by our colleagues , such salinity will not represent the true naturally occurring saline soil conditions , eventually you will get vitiated results about the salinity tolerance study.
If you want to create artificial salinity to the salinity level equal to 10dSm-1, you may make a standard curve adding different amount of NaCl to the known and constant weights of the soil. Then draw a graph according to the changes of EC. You may find the exact amount of NaCl needed to achieve that has to be added by a simple calculation.
As Dr. KS Reddy provided above. Soil salinity caused by presence of different soluble salts. It could be better option to use different soluble salts which able to prepare saline/ brine water are sodium chloride, potassium sulphate sodium bicarbonate etc.
Ec of particular level can be created either by any single salt or combination of salts. Ec of 4 ds/m can be created by Nacl or Kcl. But Nacl is dangerous because of Na. So not only the level of EC but also the type of ions that forms in soil solution that matters. Artificial salinization is required for testing the generated germplasm of crops before testing in the farmer's field. For this characterization of the salt stress (due to soil or irrigation water) of the area is essential. Based on the presence of potential toxic ions in the target site combination of salts and quantum can be finalized.Generally Nacl for salinity and Carbonates/bicarbonates for alkalinity are used singly to raise Ec and pH respectively.
There are many drawbacks to scientists making respective soil salinity artificially even though there are many soil salinity experiment going on in this present decades.
Some scientists discourage to make soil salinity artificially but others encourage it to maintain homogeneity in experimental pot because soil salinity in a given field condition may varies from one place to another place.
However, following formula may be use:
1) % salinity= 0.064 * EC
2) According to NSW Department of Primary Industries, 2005, Australia 2560 ppm is equivalent to 4 dSm-1.
Never, never and never try to create an artificial salinity in a normal soil as it does not represent a typical salt affected soil. It is a wastage of time, energy and resources. Instead, you collect soil which is naturally saline or sodic or saline-sodic. You can get the information from soil test laboratories there about the locations in Bangladesh where such problem soils exist naturally. Good Luck.
