what evaluate that the water of drain is suitable for freshwater fish bolti, what is the reference that the water parameters are good for aquatic biota (fish)
Whether your drain is good or bad for Tilapia depends on the physicochemical status of the drain. Usually if the drain carries wastewater or domestic sewage the DO level is very poor, the ammonia level is high. The situation aggravates if is not properly maintained and get filled with sludge and sediments. Such environment is not at all congenial for any fish. Still if you think to grow tilapia under such condition I will say, no it can't be good for growing that fish. Yes, they are very sturdy and stress tolerant fish spp. and there are reports that they can withstand near zero DO level if they are allowed to have access to surface air. But they will suffer high mortality if they cannot reach the surface. Yes, they are prone to ammonia toxicity like most of the fishes. The toxicity may ber manifested in physiological change in the form of lowered number of RBCs and hemolytic anemia. Oxygen saturation of arterial blood also decreases whey they are subjected to sublethal concentration of NH3 (1.1 to 3.3 mg/l) for two weeks (El-safey, 1998;2004). Their growth will be adversely affected when exposed to 0.07 to .14 mg/l unionized ammonia-N. There are other unfavourable factors. As a whole, such condition will put tilapia under severe stressful state. It's growth will be compromised and the life may even be at stake!
