I'm working with a small startup who is developing a tidal turbine prototype and would like to develop in-house tools for doing tidal turbine array layout optimization, energy yield prediction, and environmental assessment.
I would like to assess various coastal oceanographic codes for their suitability for incorporating models for tidal turbines. I'm interested in learning about how easy various codes are to learn/use/modify. Also interested in computational efficiency and accuracy.
For context, I believe that the coastal model would be used to do depth-averaged simulations. Then 3D simulations could be done by a separate CFD model, to capture wake interaction effects. I don't think coastal models will resolve turbine wakes very well, which necessitates a combined approach with full 3D CFD.
I would greatly appreciate any input. Thanks!
