I need help about Preprocessing of FHR signals. If anyone can Help me?

I am working on FHR signals. I am following paper"Open-access software for analysis of fetal heart rate signals". This paper has refer paper"M. Romano, G. Faiella, P. Bifulco, G. D’Addio, F. Clemente, M. Cesarelli, Outliersdetection and processing in CTG monitoring", http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/978-3-319-00846-2 161 (25–28).

I am not able to get how actually preprocessing is done? It's confusing.
