Hi everyone,

I am currently working on my Master's thesis where I am required to conduct a factor analysis on a scale that was used in a survey. The survey in question was developed by combining multiple scales into a bigger one. I was advised to "do an explorative factor analysis to validate the constructs".

I have been reading a lot about EFA and CFA and that it would be optimal to start with an EFA, adapt the scale, conduct a new study and do a CFA. However, in my case, there was no pilot project and no EFA was conducted before starting to use the new scale.

My question now are:

  • Should I do an EFA or a CFA on the data in order to validate the constructs, as there seems to be an ongoing debate in regards to what should be used for adapted scales. How would you go about this?
  • From what I read it is not proper to do an EFA and then a CFA on the same sample, but I have seen it done in similar theses. Is there a reason why I would need to do that too?
  • Finally, I have either the possibility to split the sample in 2 (it's not large enough) and neither can I collect new data.

I truly appreciate your help, I have been looking for days for answers!

    Thanks!

    Jonas
