I am searching some permanent cool feel product for cotton fabrics. Could anyone suggest any such products? I shall prefer a product with zinc or Zinc oxide presence. Any branded product is ok for me...
There is a company named Outlast that has developed a encapsulated change of phase material for thermal applications. Here the link: http://www.outlast.com/en/technology/
Basically, the human skin is very sensitive to thermal transients. Therefore, in order to have a “permanent” cool feeling, the best solution is probably to alternate between contact and non-contact. The first (transient) thermal contact of the skin with a material is dependent on the thermal diffusivity of the material (i.e. the thermal conductivity divided by density and heat capacity), which is essentially a property of the bulk. A permanent (steady-state) touch is dependent on thermal conductivity, which is again a property of the bulk.
Thus, as the thermal feeling of a material is related to its bulk properties, it will be very difficult to obtain such a cool feeling with a chemical finish (with low mass).
To Jose: the incorporation of PCM like Outlast will only offer a short term (non-permanent) effect.
Thanks Rene and Jose. We develop also similar pcm microcapsules, but such materials are not permanent as mentioned by Rene. We tried other materials like ZnO microcapsule and Xylitol, but such materials are not suitable for colored fabrics, specially dark colored one. Also these materials are not durable. Most of the chemicals removes after few washing. Yes, if we can improve the thermal conductivity, in different means surely that improves. These surface finishes have some effect to dissipate the body heat....
Manas springy elastic properties of the Silk fabric is mainly because of the gaps in interlacing point in warp and weft . These gaps widen after removal of the sericin gum . Increasing bulkyness of the fabric, Bulkyness increases because each silk yarn has 15 to 20 filament , they are separated by sericin removal because they are free from each because removal sericin. Each filament is triangular in shape and each filament in yarn has small loops because of the differential shrinkage make yarn springy elastic. On compression between fiinger yarns make Rustling sound. Charateristic fealture of silk yarn. All manmade fibre fabric engineering is in progress to get this structure . One of the process is alkaline hydrolysis of the polyester to get lustrous and cool feel of silk . Lots of work is in progress what we calling shingosen fabrics . BY changing cross section of the filments lots of mechanical properties are managed to get cool feel
Thanks Dr Raichurkar for your input, if we want to change fibers, flax also is a good option. At the moment, we are developing some special cotton fabrics with exceptional moisture management property, we want to enhance further the comfort property by improving the thermal conductivity of this fabric.
we have worked with PCM in our laboratory but the results are not encouraging. There is a limit to which PCM will work and after that they become ineffective.
