I am a research scholar at SSBM Geneva, Switzerland, trying to develop a System Dynamics Model for studying the long term impact of smart metering and smart grids on electric utilities, electricity consumers, regulators, technology, and manufacturers. I am especially intrigued by the potential of both positive and negative effects of the intersection of a disruptive technology and digital transformation in the progress of smart meter designs and sustainable development. As a result of the study, God willing, I hope to develop a holistic approach to long term strategy considering the underlying dynamics. This can ultimately be of help to policy makers and decision makers in this industry.

This is a very broad area and therefore not easy to give an appropiate and answer that comes to the point.
Blockchain: It will be important to create decentralized and automated markets where for example neighbours can exchange energy by providing basic energy services like EV charging or renting storage capabilities in Batteries.
Gen AI: I guess for grid analytics to detect annomalies, loss, frauds, shortages and other miss-operations behavior, can be crucial. This will help to keep the quality of service in the grid segement.
Virtual Reality: I don't think this can be real advantage for now. Reality for me at the moment is more a topic of visualization on a more sofisticated way. I don't think that this will impact or improve smart meter or smart grid functions directly. (I might be wrong as well! I would ask more VR experts on this)
AR: I'm not sure what you mean with this. Maybe a short explanation can help?

Thank you for the answer which gives valuable insights. Having been in utilities for a long, I know that implementation of a smart grid infrastructure is capital intensive, utilities in their long-term strategic planning should include upgrades and or replacements, as new technology appears. Simulation modelling for cost recovery is a tool we use in this regard.
Present data on SG implementation shows that the technologies mentioned like blockchain, VR, AR simulation etc have not yet been included in today's Smart Meters and Smart Objects or communication networks in a Smart Grid implementation. Will be very glad to have your views on this.

You are totally right. They will come new technologies that the industry is still not using. I guess also all topics about ChatGPT and other AI solutions are not adopted now in the sector. Utilities are facing big changes and they are struggeling with them, I guess you know it better than me.
I guess the speed of transforming will increase but not that fast as in other industries like Telecom or Traffic.
About the cost recovery, as far as I understood, states / governments must support this by fundings, susbsidies or other type of help. Utilities alone will not be capable (and maybe willing) take the risks of such big investments. Electricity itself is a comodity topic which is not really contributing to the ROI. New energy services must be developed and offered. That could be topic for them.
But this is just my modest view. I hope this helps?
