Mathematic models are often seen in biology papers such as evolutionary biology. As a biologist, sometimes it is hard to read those complex formula and equations. How would you do with the mathematic models when you read or review a manuscript ?
It helps me to dig into a new formula by trying to plug in some of the candidate or likely values from elsewhere in the text. It will never make sense to me if I just try to casually glean the meaning. Usually, I like to code things up in a simple program to see where my mathematical blind spots are. Then I can look up operators or functions or variables more specifically wherever I can see the code needs that more specific info.
Mathematical model for any biological function will be too complicated, if it is evolved, because it has too many variables which might not have yet been explored!!!
One trend I see is to cooperate with groups with mathematics background. So that is why many these kind of papers are published by collaborative groups. But as a reviewer of the manuscript, he/she needs to fully understand its content. More inter-discipline training is needed.
