Unculturable bacteria represent the majority of the microbial world. There are also many bacterial pathogens are very hard to grow in vitro. What are some possible ways to grow those unculturable bacteria?
Adam, iCHIP is a good technique to isolate bacteria. Many bacteria become culturable once they get isolated. But I am more interested in culturing extremely fastidious bacteria that you already have the isolates, for example, Treponema pallidum.
How about using genomic data and analysis of bacterial metabolism and biosynthetic pathways, so that we know what components are required for their growth.
