Education may be defined as
1. Getting some degree/diplomas to get a job or promotion in the job.
2. A way to earn money through a respectable profession.
3. Learning some subjects.
4. Identifying the proper ways to be followed in life by sharing experience of others.
5. Way to develop moral and social values.
6. Getting assistance to proceed towards fulfillment of qualities as an actual human being.

Education is the process of facilitating learning, receiving or giving systematic instruction or the acquisition of knowledge, skills, values, beliefs, and habits, especially at a school or university.
Thank you so much for inviting me to this session. I think all of the above mentioned points.

Emad
The school is not our life, life is our real school. Education is the way that leads us out into a life of learning and earning. Hopefully, we can all develop our full human potential, while we are alive. In the end, this learning process burns down to a set of value preferences and its practical application. Maxim Gorki called it the university of life.
Education is the process of facilitating learning, receiving or giving systematic instruction or the acquisition of knowledge, skills, values, beliefs, and habits, especially at a school or university.
The contemporary meaning of education is narrowed down to acquire degree and get job. Yet the word education was derived from the word educate which is a Latin word meaning to draw out. In India the education system before British people entered was more like drawing out the hidden potential of human.
According to Swami Vivekananda Education is not the amount of information that is put into your brain and runs riot there undigested, all your life. Education for him means that process by which character is formed, strength of mind is increased, and intellect is sharpened, as a result of which one can stand on one’s own feet.
J. Krishnamurti one of the legend thinker, philosopher, educationist said that "To understand life is to understand ourselves, and that is both the beginning and the end of education". (Krishnamurti 1953)
This is what Albert Einstein said "Education is what remains after one has forgotten what one has learned in school. In short Education reading and writing does not makes person educated but it is the development and usage of the inner potential that makes him/her educated.
The wealth of knowledge acquired by an individual after studying particular subject matters or experiencing life lessons that provide an understanding of something. Education requires instruction of some sort from an individual or composed literature. The most common forms of education result from years of schooling that incorporates studies of a variety of subjects. "Jamie knew the importance of an education, so she chose to go to a four-year university after graduating from high school."·
Education is not about getting good grades , education is not about memory test , education is not about how smartly you understand particular topic. Education is all about learning specific topic with it’s application by generating and executing different type of ideas.
Application is the most important thing in education which should be consider as the measurement of intelligence. Many schools and even colleges totally ignore this aspect. Not being innovative is as much of a roadblock as having poor knowledge and skills.
The way we are studying or so called educating ourselves is totally different. In school class teacher told us to “learn” particular chapter or topic and then after some days there will be a test of that chapter or topic. These nonsense is called “LEARN” by the class teacher. Will it increase our intelligence? –Not at all , The teachers are just checking our memory power.
That’s what we are doing for long long time. Everywhere we speak about development but what about the development in an education system!
Education is :
There are many definitions in the textbooks and also my forerunners have given remarkable answers. First of all: Education is a well known fact. Every person has own experiences with it and the right to define or to understand the concept "education" within the context of his or her own experience. This could be called a subjective view though, but the difference to the view of others isn't so big. Therefore the general belief that a word of a very famous person - like Einstein or Pestalozzi - must be nearer to the truth than the descriptions of other people is wrong. Also famous people, inclusive famous educators, have no better explanation of "explanation", regarding education, than yourself. I prefer practical definitions and pragmatic differentiations. Education can concern the relation between educator and the "educamd" or the relation between one person to his peers, escpecialy the rolle and the influence of the peer group to a single member. Third: You can understand education as the process between an older generation to younger generation. The latter take over the cultural views and achievements of an older generation with the history of these phenomena and events. In considering education you may the emotional, cognitive or acting processes you may look at mutual expectations, interactive processes like sharing experiences, and results of acting: this could be texts, achievements of higher quality (than before), knowledge, abilities, but also an increasing need to have and to get self-responsibility, autonomous action, and extension of interests in social behavior.
We can say tha education is the proces of formal learning as well as process of informal learning. The outcome of learning process are knowledge and skills.

Education can be in forest community, whithout scool.
Education of morale, relating to the practice of good and evil.
Reducing ignorance and seeking new knowledge. It is an enduring journey that can never be completed.
The roots of education are bitter, but the fruit is sweet.
Aristotle
The Education is defined as the process that aims to provide the learner with all the knowledge bases, in a systematic, deliberate and targeted manner, so that the person is able to employ what he has received in his working life in order to improve and contribute to a real renaissance on solid foundations.
Education is the process to facilitate the acquisition of knowledge, compression, application, analysis, evaluation, and synthesis, also known as Bloom's taxonomy as the process of constructivist learning to deconstruction as discussed by Jacques Derrida. Education is multidisciplinary and includes Howard Gardner's 7 intelligences. It also includes common sense and people skills.

I am recalling the words of Will Durant " sixty years ago I knew everything, now I know nothing, Education is a progressive discovery of our ignorance"
The word education can be found in Russian church books already in the 17th century. Probably, a direct link with the Old Slavonic form-to create, to compose, from the Slavic one the image - likeness. Conclusion from the Russian language: education is the creation of an image, likeness.

Learning new things through a structured program by an institution or mentor
Education has different meanings for different people. Some consider textbook knowledge as education while there are some cases when people never go to schools and colleges but still very much knowledgeable due to their urge to learn from various experiences of life. Education comprises the opportunity to learn various subjects which ultimately leads to award of degrees, diplomas etc. and help to get jobs, success in life. I personally feel if a person has not developed any moral values and manners, there is no value of education. Apes are the ancestors of human beings, education has actually propelled this evolution.
Education in the wild ... versus ... Organized and institutionalized education. Eat what you like.
Education is a means of changing the undesirable behavior of a person, group or society.

"Education is not only learning from books, memorizing some facts but also learning how to look, how to listen to what the books are saying whether they are saying something true or false. All that is part of education. Education is not just to pass the exams take degree and a job, get married and settle down but also to be able to listen to the birds, to see the extraordinary beauty of a tree and the shape of the hills and to feel with them, to be really, directly in touch with them"
This is from J Krishnamurti on Education. He was Indian philosopher, speaker and writer. In the early life he was said to be the "New world teacher " You can listen to him on you tube : https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC88A5W9XyWx7WSwthd5ykhw
For me , education is sharing and learning constantly that is what my parents and grandMom (my Dad' s Mom) said and I grew up believing that :)
According to Gilbert Keith Chesterton: education - is the period in which you are taught by someone you do not know, something you do not want to know.
For me, education is a privilege, a challenge, a lifelong commitment.
Education is a respectable profession that earns one academic qualifications through long term training. It is a process through which ignorance is sold out and knowledge is bought.
Education is the delivery of knowledge, skills, and information from teachers to students. While the above metaphor—education as a delivery system—sounds reasonable, it misses what is most important about education.
Providing a proper definition of education is complicated by the fact that there is not a clear consensus about what is important about being and becoming educated.
For many people the importance of education lies in future job prospects, for others it's quality of citizenship, and yet others just want literacy, critical thinking, and/or creativity.
Behind all the differences of opinion about what it means to be educated is one very basic idea: an educated person is someone who perceives accurately, thinks clearly, and acts effectively on self-selected goals.
In my understanding, education is the very first step on the road to becoming an informed person. A well-informed person is an erudite person. However, nevertheless:
1. An erudite person can know a lot but can not do anything.
2. A smart person can know much less than erudite, but he can be able to do it.
3. A wise person can know even less than a smart person, but he will never find himself in a difficult situation, in which there could be a smart person because a wise person can predict future events.
Definition of education
1a : the action or process of educating or of being educated; also : a stage of such a process
b : the knowledge and development resulting from an educational process
2: the field of study that deals mainly with methods of teaching and learning in schools

What is education? A definition and discussion
"What is education? Is it different from schooling? In this piece Mark K Smith explores the meaning of education and suggests it is a process of inviting truth and possibility. It can be defined as the wise, hopeful and respectful cultivation of learning undertaken in the belief that all should have the chance to share in life...
Education, as we understand it here, is a process of inviting truth and possibility, of encouraging and giving time to discovery. It is, as John Dewey (1916) put it, a social process – ‘a process of living and not a preparation for future living’. In this view educators look to act with people rather on them..."

Education as such is a process of developing and enhancing the cultivation of various physical, mental and moral powers.
English language obscures the fact that the little word "is" can have two entirely different meanings, which I will call here (1) the definitional meaning and (2) the denotational meaning.
(1) definitional meaning of education:
(2) denotational meaning of education:
Unfortunately, the foregoing discussion oscillates between both meaning poles in an irregular and hence unpredictable manner such that it is sometimes difficult to infer whether the writer is writing about education-as-it-occurs-in-reality versus education-as-it-might-be-in-utopia.
Unfortunately, both meanings exist in the minds of most people who think and talk about it. Quite often, this generates a mental conflict for them, because education-as-it-occurs-in-reality most often is far less cost-effective and goal-satisfying for the people involved (parents, students, teachers, managers, ...) than education-as-it-might-be-in-utopia.
In economic terms this means that too often education turns out to be a loss-loss-situation for all stakeholders. And ... the worst of all ... we know it, and suffer from it (e.g., think of the situation in some Eastern countries with their high percentages of student suicides)!
Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world. The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character - that is the goal of true education
For me education is acquiring knowledge and using it to effect positive changes for the benefit of society.
The term education system generally refers to public schooling, not private schooling, and more commonly to kindergarten through high school programs. Schools or school districts are typically the smallest recognized form of “education system” and countries are the largest. States are also considered to have education systems.
Simply put, an education system comprises everything that goes into educating public-school students at the federal, state, or community levels:
While the term education system is widely and frequently used in news media and public discourse, it may be difficult to determine precisely what the term is referring to when it is used without qualification, specific examples, or additional explanation.
Like the teaching profession, education systems are, by nature, extremely complex and multifaceted, and the challenges entailed in reforming or improving them can be similarly complex and multifaceted. Even reforms that appear to be straightforward, simple, or easily achieved may, in practice, require complicated state-policy changes, union-contract negotiations, school-schedule modifications, or countless other conditions. For a related discussion, see systemic reform.
Dear Dr. Vossen,
There is existence of two thoughts in our mind in many subjects_ what is and what should be.
Not only for education system of a country, but during discussion of national or international politics, economic strategy, environment pollution prevention laws etc., we think these two together.
We may not convert the conditions of "what is" to "what should be", but consciousness development is not totally valueless,I think.
the act or process of imparting or acquiring general knowledge, or acquiring particular knowledge or skills, as for a profession, developing the powers of reasoning and judgment, and generally of preparing oneself or others intellectually for mature life/a degree, level, or kind of schooling/university education/ art of teaching; pedagogics
Education is the process of re-arranging the environment for the learner to acquire knowledge by himself.
Education is the process of acquiring knowledge or skills formally or otherwise in order to empower oneself to solve problems. All creatures exist because of their capacity to solve problems that are either simple or complex, using instinct or thinking. Education as a human thinking endeavour augments wisdom and wisdom likewise enables us to create knowledge to solve problems. Wisdom without education is less effective because of shortages of knowledge and theoretical principles that enable one to extrapolate behaviours and decision making processes about issues that affects our living.
Education is a nutrient of knowledge while imagination is a rocket of thought processes that enable us to go outside the known territory of knowledge and establish new knowledge so that we search truth about things that are outside of the known domain of knowledge.
The development and thereby the creation of the galaxy of mathematics is a typical example of the superimposition of both acquisition of knowledge or learning and expansion of knowledge through creativity and imagination.
Very appropriately defined terms, and all options are true in practical life, but I will choose last three

It is quite interesting to read what people have to say about education, and how they say it. For most people, the term education appears to refer to long-term processes of supervised learning among people. In the end, it boils down to acquiring new competences, or improving and advancing already learned competences of all sorts.

Education is the way to pass on knowledge to generations, be it positive or negative knowledge. And that these can be processed and acquired by who is being educated.
Education is one of the central characteristic of a civilized society and indeed the means by which societies ensure that everything which is best in our society is passed on to succeeding generations.
"Charged with immense responsibility and tasked with countless duties, education policymakers are at the helm of the social-cultural experiment we call public education... Education Policy is an Instrument for Social-Cultural Change ...
Life events and processes like learning, development, and the policy decisions framing students' formal educational opportunities and experiences are distinct, yet inseparable, and are, singularly and together, complex dynamic systems with many interacting heterogeneous elements stitched together by the “. . . fabric of events, actions, interactions, retroactions, determinations, and chance that constitute our phenomenal world ..."

Education is linked to success in life, structured as a process of maturation, moving from childhood to adulthood. It also provides the cognitive tools to deal with the world, handling its mechanistic and technological complexities.
It has another arm, in being used to develop abstract potentiality, writing (not abstract but its product usually is), thinking, understanding in specific formats.
Education is that light in a deep dark tunnel of ignorance that leads a person to his goal with an understanding of enlightened path.
Education is the process of facilitating learning, or the acquisition of knowledge, skills, values, beliefs, and habits. Educational methods include storytelling, discussion, teaching, training, and directed research. Education frequently takes place under the guidance of educators, but learners may also educate themselves.

My thought about education is that it is an important process of making sound humans.
Education is also a process that gives meaning to a human being's life. It is something that differentiates him/her from a beast.
The thinking of the educated person and the uneducated person is different.
Education is a process which makes aware people about good and bad, it makes us good human being, it makes us to help the others, and tells us how to live this life happily by doing good things.
Thanks
Education means, gain of Knowledge. It makes us to differentiate between Right and Wrong, Good and Bad. It makes us to live happily and give sense to Live and Let othets Live Happily.
Education is a road to our progress & knowledge where knowledge is power & there is no limit to the knowledge .In this line I have placed my article under the name '' Education '' which I submit herewith for your kind perusal .
This is my personal opinion
I think that education and knowledge are two different things but also connected. Schools and Universities give us knowledge. However, education is more about us, our life experiences and personality. Our education will decide if we use positively or negatively the knowledge learned. A mixture of good education and knowledge is supposed to open our mind and respect other views.
very good answer @ Subhash C. Kundu you have summarized the essence of the term education.
Education is how to think and solve problems to know the facts.
Very interesting question and brilliant answers, I must say.
In my opinion,"Education is a process of inculcating/enriching/nourishing the knowledge of a person."
Information is add-on (increment) to one's knowledge and education is a process of this increment.
It is a never-ending process. It may involve self-educating or from other sources.
What does a “quality” education mean? What should it enable learners to do? From getting a job to getting into graduate school, programs make a variety of claims about how they help students...

Education refines man totally. It's a lifelong process. Education is acquired both formally and informally.
We acquire part in formal setting such as schools (whatever level right from elementary, high schools and post-secondary schools). The other parts are acquired at homes, religious centers, and our communities. God demands parents to “Train up a child in the way he should go; and when he is old, he will not depart from it, Proverb 22:6”. Align their morals, beliefs, values, and behaviors to the Word of God. It is the responsibility of the parents to train their children. It is NOT the duties of the Daycare Centers. Unfortunately, parents have abandoned their roles, religious centers loose focus.
According to the most widely used ways of organizing levels of expertise: Bloom’s Taxonomy of Education objectives; we go to schools to acquire skills in three main domains:
Education = Respect
The recpect for the people who gives us the knowledge.
The respect for knowledge received.
The respect for the people who receive from us the knowledge.
(an educated person = a respectful person)
Education is concerned with cultivating the human, society and the possibility of a common world.
What is - in your own language - the most appropriate name or expression for educating | education | educated?
In what respects does it differ from the common English word education used all over Europe?
If you could start over, and invent something like education, how would you conceive of education - theoretically or practically - and in what ways would it differ from what is commonly called "education"?
In other words: do we lack something important if there would be no education at all? Just schooling?
How will you define "EDUCATION" ?
Education encompasses people, process, tools / technologies & contents in order to facilitate learning & teaching so that knowledge can be transferred & multiplied.
I want to ask: If a person competently speaks, for example, in English - is this a sign of a person's education? Why am I asking this? Because all Americans speak correctly, but do not know the rules of the syntax of the language, because in schools it is not studied. The syntax is studied in universities and only at special faculties. Why, then, they say correctly? Because everyone is talking like that everywhere: at home, on the street, in a store, on TV, and so on. If a person has good manners of behavior - is this a sign of a person's education? In my opinion - this is the result of training. If a person has knowledge - is this a sign of a person's education? I answer this way: you can know, but do not understand. And if a person knows a lot, but does not understand anything - is this an educated person? For example, an erudite person knows a lot, he may even have encyclopedic knowledge. Does this mean that an erudite person is an educated person? If a person knows the technology to create a product, does this mean that he is an educated person? It seems to me that one must understand the difference between the words "to know" and "to be able" in a broader sense. In my understanding, if a person knows a lot, but is not able to create new knowledge from previous knowledge, he is not an educated person. At best, this person is a consumer. In my opinion, an educated person should be a creator, not a consumer. Today's education system in the whole world produces mainly consumers, not creators. Therefore, the world is degrading, because educated people can simply disappear at all and then no one will create intellectual products.
"Educated person should be a creator, not only a consumer of knowledge".
The difference between-to know and to understand is the difference between sense of educated and non educated person.
Thank you, Dr. Fedulov for a nice concept clearing write up.
👍
I want to share one personal experience with you. I listen Rabindra Sangeet (songs written by Rabindranath Tagore in Bengali language - every song with a set of philosophical thought). So I have choice for some singers of that particular type of song.
I was admirer of one famous female singer. Once I met her. During discussion on several topics, sense of one Rabindra Sangeet sung by her came as a topic of discussion.
I was very much surprised - that singer do not actually know or feel the meaning of that song!
Dear Gennady: Thanks for your excellent answer to this important question of Shibabrata Pattanayak. You not only gave us your opinion about the meaning of the profound concept "education", but also made it clear - with examples - how it essentially differs from routine rote learning as practiced all over the world today.
You made it utterly clear for anybody that and why the world of education is in danger of losing it power or even disappearing. Instead of motivating people to take part in the challenging adventure of creating the next generations' higher level of knowledge and craft, many universities and other higher institutes are satisfied to sell (sic!) their existing Body of Knowledge to their students. Those students will grow up with the erroneous belief that having a stock of knowledge and skills NOW will be sufficient to master and survive the challenges of the FUTURE. It will not, never.
In my opinion, we should educate people to become Problem Solvers, both theoretically and practically, because solving an existing problem is a highly creative act, and not just blind craft of using and applying existing knowledge. And that, I learned from you, makes out the whole difference, and is what really matters. Thanks again.
