Some microscope objectives offer long working distance, low magnification, and moderately high NA (say 0.5) for the purpose of imaging wide fields of view. There are aspheric lenses which have similar specs, but are much cheaper. Would they be suitable as a cheap alternative? In principle aspheres should be aberration free at the central spot for one wavelength. I don't care about chromatic aberration, but I do care about off-axis aberrations such as coma. How well do off-axis points image with an asphere?
