Is there any solid option to educate Indian farmers with best option to avoid burning crop residues? You may suggest towards sustainable use of crop residues and role of government towards stop these things.
Rabindra I guess the indian farmers are very much aware of what they are doing. The best field practices are often not the options for India and thus they do what they think is best in their interest. Do you have any other option available for them. Is government going to provide them with ay means? or will only try pushing people who are already at the edge. This require serious thinking espically in Indian sub continent context. I will give you another example whhere Indian farmers are not abiding by the regulations. Use of pesticides espicallly endosulphan which is banned all over the world and Indian being signatory to Stockholm Convention of Persistent Organic Pollutants should stop.
If the farmers stop using endosulphan they might reduce risk by 1 - 2 % that the banned chemical pose to health, but the risk induced due to food insecurity will be 100% is it advisable to take it?
I agree with you Mr. Saif. But visited some villages in Punjab state and interact them, and I feel they are not aware regarding bad impact of environment and climate.
I agree with both of you. The government and farmers play the same role about this problem. Sometimes some simple education can cause farmers to stop burning their residuals. i.e. in a province in my country where the people cultivate rice as their major crops they were taught how to use their residuals to grow mushroom. Now at the end of the season a lot of farmers collect their residuals and use them in an effective way. But we should not forget the collection of these residuals is really hard in a large scale, so the government should help them to by baler by providing loan for them.
Therefore education is a good way but is not sufficient.
They way of awareness and use of people power in the right way is main concern to protect any adverse effect. It may be with respect of all area. So, if we come forward to initiate our awareness programme among the peoples, they eager to know and demand their requirements form the government with proper and effective way. Such plan 100% works and it goes in sustainable manner..........I am very thankful to both Mr. Saif and Mr. Benyamin to share their views..............and hope so in later stage we will stop it..................
Certainly awareness is a must. But the resolurces required for an efficient and effective change are not available in many developing countries. The awareness should start at government level.
I feel business can be created, supported by government incentives, to use the crop residues for different applications: construction materials (engineered wood such as particle board, plywood etc), packaging materials (cardboard), composting, pyrolysis for biochar production.
