Standard settings in the examination are essential to ensure that examinations are valid and reliable. This necessitates clarity of objectives of methods of examinations, tools to be placed for examinations, and writing examination questions by teams. These actions ensure that questions focus on core curriculum and common cases rather than rare diseases and small prints in textbooks.
Formative assessment is vital to give feedback to students. Today I learnt from one student, from another university, that the coordinator of a subject is difficult to approach and he does like to give feedback to students on their errors in examinations. I wonder, who asked this man to be a coordinator. Why is he a coordinator? And does he know the role and duties of a subject coordinator?
Improving the standard settings of examination necessities 1) clear policies and guidelines, 2) staff training in preparation of examination question, revision and improvement, development of model answers, and marking, 3) testing the validity and reliability of examinations, 4) evaluation of the application of these standards and how examinations are prepared and implemented, 5) matching these standards with international settings (international advisory board, accreditation, etc.).
Unfortunately there is no gold standard method to determine the cut score between pass and fail. I think, in our system at least, it is largely determined and influenced by a higher authority depending on many factors. The type of the assessment and the intended learning outcomes of the course is the major influencer here especially if you prefer the absolute method of standard setting. while we accept a 50% score as a pass score in some tests, we cannot accept less then a 100% in others (especially in medicine where it is the write or wrong decision, nothing in between).
In my opinion, many sectors should be involved in determining the required pass score. Subject experts, patients, students and most importantly stakeholders should have their say in this issue.
