I contributed an abstract to a special issue book in which the publisher assigned a single DOI for the entire issue. As per the publisher’s protocol, all abstracts/chapters within this special issue share this same DOI.
However, when I attempt to add my contribution to my ResearchGate profile, I am unable to do so because another contributor has already used this DOI for their upload. The platform does not allow multiple entries with the same DOI, even though this accurately reflects the publisher’s official assignment.
Could you please advise:
- Is there a recommended method for multiple authors to add their individual contributions from the same special issue (with the same DOI) on ResearchGate?
- Is there a way to associate my abstract/chapter with the existing DOI entry, or to otherwise reflect my authorship accurately?
- If not, is there a workaround or planned update to accommodate publications from special issues where a single DOI is used for multiple works?
DOIs are by definition unique identifiers. And these are not identifiers for publications, as often assumed, but identifiers for digital objects (the name says it). For collections of abstracts, very often only one DOI is assigned to the file of the complete volume, not to each abstract. The problem is that for a DOI one has to have a file, but usually there is only one original file for the complete abstract book, not for each abstract. For each DOI, also a "landing page" has to be created, and this would demand a lot of efforts if each abstract got its own DOI. ResearchGate correctly allows to use each DOI only once. What is not correct is to use the DOI that stands for the complete abstract book by the author(s) of one abstract. You just have to leave the DOI field empty, because anyway your abstract does not have its own DOI.
