I quantified the provisioning services of some regions by its production of several crops like grain, vegetables, and fruits. How can I unify them into one value so that I can compare the provisioning service with only one value for each region? I read some articles, and there are some alternatives:
- to add up the weight of the crops directly for each region;
- to add up the monetary values of the crops in each region.
I think the first one obviously overlooked the difference of nutrients of different crops, and the second one requires economic parameters and might be affected by trade. Is there a better way? Or, can I do that by standardizing them into calories or some other nutrient value and add them up? If the answer is "yes", then is there a reference to that?

Most definitions of ecosystem services are typically anthropocentric (cf. geocentric) but should not be reduced to agriculture. This query could be reformulated to better represent the research question. Is it the intention to primarily examine, say, agroecosystems (or just agricultural production)?
Thank you, Dr. Olivier Serrat. Actually, I evaluated several ecosystem services for the districts of a city. For each category of ecosystem services, I chose one indicator. For instance, for regulating services, I use carbon sequestration as the indicator; for culture service, an indicator on recreation or tourist is used to represent it. For provisioning service, I calculated the production amount of the crops, so I got a value for each crop. But I want to aggregate them into one indicator so that I can compare the provisioning services between districts more easily.
Thank you, Dr. Anoop Kumar Srivastava. Exactly, now ecologists are linking the traits of organisms to function and services. I am doing research on that topic. I have calculated the biodiversity of my research area, and now am working on the ecosystem services part.
