Actually, I am interested to check the ferroelectric behavior of my non-conducting polymer composite film. Since the electrical resistance is high, how to study the voltage variation with respect to applied current? The freestanding films are of the thickness 300 micrometer.
First, electrodes (using silver paste) should be coated on both top and bottom surfaces of the freestanding polymer film and dry at 100 oC for 1-2 hours. After drying the electrode coated film, check the short-circuit nature of the testing sample (Ag/film/Ag) using multimeter. That is, the testing sample should not be in the short-circuit configuration (It should show an open-circuit nature). Then, connect a voltameter in parallel to the sample and an ammeter in series to the sample. Supply voltage gradually from 0-100 V and measure current flowing the sample using the ammeter for every applied voltage. One advice that try to complete all characterization of the film using non-destructing techniques such as XRD, SEM & EDS, Raman spectroscopy, UV-visible spectroscopy, etc. Finally, do the I-V measurement because the application of high voltage (high electric field) lead to dielectric breakdown of the film.
