I'm currently working on the mass production of bacterial cells for industrial use. My question is how do I effectively sterilize a 50L and a 250L stainless steel bioreactor?
For further information, the bacteria used are of the Bacilli family and it has no genetic modifications (meaning it is not resistant to any antibiotics at all) and thus requires thorough sterilization of the bioreactors.
Should I use steam sterilization, chemical, UV-radiation, or what?
And with each method, can you please recommend what machine do I need to execute the sterilization method?
Maybe a 50-liter bioreactor will fit into an autoclave such as used in many prepartion labs, but a 250-L most likely not. We used to have a 300-L reactor and it was sterilized by means of an external steam generator. I can't think of any other way, except for thermolabile components (e.g. vitamins), which must be filter sterilized separately as a concentrated solution and added after autoclaving or steam sterilization
