The concept of sustainable business models contains a paradox, because sustainability involves the reduction of information asymmetries, whereas entrepreneurship involves enhanced and secured levels of information asymmetries. I have written an article on this topic (see attachment) but I would like to discuss this issue with others to learn other viewpoints, solutions and strategies. all feedback is welcome
May I argue that this symmetry&asymmetry problem related to information could be solved to some degree via proper contracting terms in relation to intellectual property rights among stakeholders. With the help of these kinds of optimized agreements among partners in an ecosystem, unfair competitive behavior could be minimized. Institutionalizing sustainability and its source may alleviate information dis-balance.
In my humble opinion, the issue of asymmetry does bot need to be solved at all. We should let the market forces take care of it. As time passes and new information makes previously valuable ones obsolete or less effective, that information will automatically be made available to lost businesses. Information asymmetry is necessary for startups, and by the time startups grow into well known businesses, previous information asymmetries disappear and new ones emerge.
ok Wonjae, great, but I guess that today's societal issues like global warming, but also new disruptive technologies like AI need more societal consideration as well. and there the paradox appears, because in order to become debatable, companies should at least try to reduce information asymmetries. but thanks for your engagement anyway. vincent
Fine question. It is easy to sympathise with the view that sustainability entails reduction in information asymmetry. However, that argument premises on singularity of human capability. That way, information becomes a holonomic structure. Yet, that human desire (the singularity) is removed from reality. Now, when looking at entrepreneurship, the information that must be asymmetric is at a different tier. We are looking at information as private property. And the information that such private property exists is what we strive to make common.
Dear Fred, I think you have something important here, but I do not completely follow what you say. what do you mean with singularity, with holonomic structure and why is that desire removed from reality?
