Hi all
I am trying to simulate thermo-optic effect in SOI waveguides using Comsol software. But even couldn't be able to extract the temperature distribution. I am using heater(of aluminium) but confused in choosing temperature values as there are so many options for temperature selection like initial value , dependent variable of temperature.
Does anybody knows how can I solve this kind of problem?

In order to simulate thermo-optic effect using eater, you have first to consider the Laplace equation for calculation of temperature variation in the device and after with the mapping of temperature to calculate variation of the refractive indexes of different materials (Si, SiO2) with temperature. Using a mode solver with the new mapping of the refractive indexes allows the variation of the effectif index versus temperature. A way to solve this problem is to decouple calculations of temperature variation in the device and optical behavior.

The accurate characterization of the temperature-dependent thermo-optic waveguide is critical. Since there are various parameters, you should consider before you start.
What is the application of your waveguide?. what is the software that you will use for simulation?. some software some like as Comosol and Lumerical can provide some good details about the materials.
Move to next level through finding parameters in Laplace equation. Don't forget the meshing issue that can change the accuracy of your simulation.

I am using Comsol for this and I am confused about the boundary conditions like heat flux on external boundaries and Insulation for internal. Before going to thermo coupling with optical , I am trying to simulate the thermal distribution by using one heater in my waveguide but unfortunately couldn't be able to extract the thermal distribution.

Thermal distribution depends on the heat flux . You should start from different distances along the waveguide if you apply the heating on the surface or buried.
start with high heat flux to find at least change refractive index. After that reduce the heat flux, to draw the relation between temperature variation with refractive index.
