while going for comparitive study related to wear and friction testing,if the counteface material is too hard and test specimens are comparitively less hard, then is it required to go for a selectice counteface material or hardened steels can be considered as counteface
the answer for this question is depending what you want to test. for example if you want to test a mild steel you can use a martensitic steel as a counter face material. as you know the hardest material is the diamond and after that Boron Nitride but these two materials are quite expensive.
Since I am testing iron based composite against en31 hardened steel but one of the reviewer commented on the selection of the counterface material. I was too surprised on this question as in most of the comparitive studies , mostly people used hardened steel with 60HRc hardness.
It would be a eye opener if some one can throw more light

Joined to what has been said above please pay attention to the compatibility of the friction pair. I recommend as an indenter balls of the ball bearings (100Cr6 steel) from their experience. In this case, the friction conditions are almost identical at the start
Depends on every parameter. Type of test, speed, loading conditions, lubrication and temperature. What prof. Grinkevych said is crucial and his suggestion is good for not-too-extreme testing conditions.

A counter face should be harder than the material is to be tested,so that the wear rate can be measure for the material.
The wear mechanism is dependent to the friction interface of the tribo pairs.
The COF is dependent to the wear test parameters and the surface properties of the selected materials and its contact interface.
Your question is very general towards very different phisical and chemical properties of materials. The counterface may be harder or the same hard as the investigating material. But what else is very important - the area of surface and the friction area. As you know during tribological tests where the counterace is ball (sphere shape), the analysis of friction and wear is very hard. It follows from continuous change of area of friction. It is crucial because the pressure (unit pressure) is changable. This situation caused that friction conditions are changable. Because of the fact I prefer pins and blocks where the friction area will be stable. If you use lubricants you should be aware that this is third body (material) and it may cause new phisical and chemical processes what may be different in different conditions of friction.
