Search for some latest papers in your area of study and cite them in your research papers. It should not be just citation; you should mention some strong/week points and your opinion about them.
If you are interested in repeating previously conducted research, I agree that you need to first review the literature to identify the studies that are feasible, relevant, and of interest for you to repeat. If the researchers used a commercial instrument they will have discussed the instrument in their write-up, so it shouldn't be difficult for you to locate--though it might be costly. If the researchers created their own instrument, I would recommend contacting them and expressing your interest in using the tool to repeat their study. If the research was conducted via a university as opposed to a commercial research house, it is likely that the researchers would be happy to share their instrument with you and might even discuss some challenges or pitfalls they experienced along the way.

You need to copy their methodology exactly and contact the researchers, as they do not always present all the information in the article. Missing tiny detail changes a lot according to the butterfly wings theory.
