Hello, my name is Manahil, and I am a Foundation Veterinary Nursing student, studying at Plumpton College. For my final year research project, I am conducting a study into how well dog owners know their pets. The aim is to understand much more about what dog owners may perceive and understand about how their dogs may be feeling, especially in response to certain situations. It is hoped that this research will help to guide owners in providing the right responses to their pets’ emotions and also inform veterinary nursing professionals on how best to support dog owners in understanding their pets more accurately.
The questionnaire is anonymous and data will be deleted once the project is finished (April 2024). It will be securely stored and not shared with any third parties for the duration of the research. Participants maintain the right to withdraw at any time. The questionnaire will take approximately 5 minutes to complete.

Most owners are anthropomorphic, do not understand canine emotional signals and frequently do not even notice signs that dogs are uncomfortable. Because this is still a profession that is not regulated by statute, owners use unreliable sources to obtain information (and conformation bias) and there is far too little co-operation between veterinary professionals and behaviourists and trainers.
Positive reinforcement techniques are spreading but they are by no means universal which can often exacerbate problems. There are many high profile trainers, and even behaviourists who disseminate poor information. For instance, owners have become obsessed with "socialising" their dogs without understanding about socialisation periods and without respecting dogs' feelings and needs. Poorly trained owners cause problems for dogs by not respecting dogs that require distance or simply do not like a particular dog. Many owners do not pay attention to their dogs when out, being more interested in their mobile telephones, children or friends. Too many dogs are simply bought as accessories with own shaving no desire to understand their dogs' emotional needs.
In Pakistan, the bond between humans and their dogs is strong, rooted in understanding and companionship. Owners possess a deep awareness of their dogs' well-being, nurtured through a close relationship and attentive observation. They often have a keen understanding of basic behaviors, supported by a record of their dog's history. Through careful monitoring of their furry friends' behaviors and senses, they are quick to notice any changes or alterations, ensuring their beloved companions receive the care and attention they need. This bond reflects a profound connection between humans and dogs, where communication transcends language, and empathy guides their interactions. Manahil Mansoor
Is there any empirical evidence to support understanding between owners and dogs in Pakistan?
In my experience, yes most owners (about 70%) know them very well (i mean their behaviour, feeding and playing habits,..etc,)
