Of course there is: Just level it off using an electrocautery device. I have been doing this for 15 years with no complications or loss of vestibular depth.
after local anesthesia make sure you mark the epulis area and using an Allis forceps just hold the epulis and cut exactly around it or use laser to cut around it ,and if you use electrosurgery (not my favorite) be careful from touching the forceps. once you cut the enlargement suture ie approximate the two flaps and that is it ,you will not need to do vestibulopalsty later .The secret is sticking to the out line of the epulis
