Hi, I have dried iron oxide magnetic nanoparticles (Fe3O4) as brown powder, I wonder how I can possibly re-disperse them into a solvent to make a uniform magnetic solution. I don't know either I have to synthesize the nanoparticles by myself or there is any procedure to re-disperse them. I would really appreciate it if someone could help me with it. Thanks
You can use an ultrasonic bath to disperse magnetic iron oxide in hexane. However, the temperature of the mixture increases when the ultrasonic bath was used. Therefore, the mixture temperature should be controlled to prevent hexane evaporation.

when iron oxide NPs were synthesized by oxidation of ferrous chloride in basic aqueous solution at elevated temperature and pressure. The particles were highly crystalline and that the diameters of the particles could be tuned from 15 to 31 nm through the variation of the reaction conditions. The NPs exhibited high saturation magnetization in the range of 53.3- 97.4 emu/g and their magnetic behavior depends on the particle size.

Hi, Fe3O4 nanoparticles should not be black as far as I know. Are you sure they did not oxidize to maghemite? Also Goethite (FeOOH) has a brown color. You might want to check the Curie temperature, before you do all the work dispensing them.

Masoud Kazemi I would still verify the material. Magnetite should be black. I have had many instances, where I bought Fe3O4 and received an oxidized sample. Magnetite oxidizes at room temperature to maghemite (brown) and if there is water present goethite (brown). It is possible that only the surface is oxidized. But magnetite should be black.
