I am currently working on foam glass production. I used soda lime glass, and the foaming agent was limestone. The heating temperature was 850 ℃, the heating rate was 10 ℃/min, and the heating time was 20 min. After the natural cooling, the surface of foam glass that I produced was smooth and I cannot see obvious pores. I want to know are there any suggestions on producing foam glass with pores on the surface?

You do not get pores on the glass surface when it is hot, because it is a very unfavorable condition in terms of energy: the liquid glass tends to have a smooth surface. But you can grind the surface after it has cooled down, then the inner pores on the surface will be opened.
Glass grinding is a widely used technology. This is done under water cooling with the diamond wheel. On the other hand, etching with hydrofluoric acid is very problematic: the acid is extremely toxic and you end up with an uneven surface.
