I am working on storm water runoff modeling for an urban catchment area. I am not having storm water drainage network map and drainage channels' details. What I have with me is open (or natural) drainage map.
Could anyone please tell me if storm water runoff modeling can be done for an urban catchment area when storm water drainage network map is not available? If yes, how? Also, can the same be done with open drainage (or natural) network? If anybody has references, kindly share!
Any suggestion or help provided is much appreciated!

In Indian conditions many times the storm runoff and drainage channels are same and rarely separate but need to confirm on ground. For doing modelling you need to have information on nodes (width depth type invert elevation), conduits, outlets etc. apart from rainfall. Runoff needs to be routed using hydrological models to the nodes wherein subsequently routed using hydarulic models to see inundated nodes. However to get field data is tough and in GIS format further a challenge. Your DEM also needs to be of finest resolution unlike used for rural catchments.

You can make use of black-box models- ANN, STF or anything else that could explain the basin outflow with precipitation. Example:

Akanksha, you may also check out this dissertation by Joshua Cantone (https://www.ideals.illinois.edu/bitstream/handle/2142/16073/2_Cantone_Joshua.pdf?sequence=4). He was using the IUHM model, which seems to work with limited drainage infrastructure data. There is also a good review of several other models in the text.

Akanksha, Good that you are working in storm water. Very limited work has been done in this field in India. Coming to your question, you could possibly start with the conventional equation defined by Mulvaney (1850), i.e.,
Q = 0.278 x C x I x A
where Q = runoff in m3/s,
C = runoff coefficient, taken as 1 for urban set-up,
I = rainfall intensity,
A = catchment area
But, the result will give you a very rough estimate to start with. You could improve upon it through further modeling.. Best,

Somebody messaged me on this. But then, In above rational equation, 'I' has to be in mm/hr and A in km^2. The value 0.278 is multiplied to get the Q component in m^3/s.
Great suggestions! Simulation models like SWMM need the network information. The Rational method is event dependent and limited in applicability to dynamic assessments of catchments. Have you tried the HSPF model, which works well in an urban catchment? Other simpler models include GWLF.
