Heating rate is one of the vital parameter in determining the by-products' compositions besides by-products production in a pyrolysis process. It is generally researched in kinetic study, TGA analysis, microwave pyrolysis and autoclave pyrolysis, where it maybe manipulated electronically. What about conventional (non-electronic) system?
Any system that produces temperatures as a function of time can produce a heating rate, which is the slope of this line. A few important considerations:
1. If your practical system has large particles, the particle centers experience much smaller heating rates than the surface and there is no single heating rate that is meaningful.
2. If you use a thermocouple or any other conductive wire to measure the temperature, the wire leads commonly distort the temperature measurement and the distortion can be large during rapid transients.
3. Physical reactions (vaporization, condensation, melting, etc.) and chemical reactions (oxidation, absorption, decomposition) can and usually do have large heats associated with them and strongly influence the local heating rate.
Saw your Q. In my early carreer I ran the pyrolysis MS group at AMOLF. The byproduct composition is very dependent on the pressure in your system. We always tried to avoid secondary reactivity. Our heating rates relatively were high using ramps in vacuo of 80 C per second. Our layers of material were thin and in the order of 100 micron max.
