The first factor that someone should take into consideration as far as Russia's invasion of Ukraine, is that Russia is a permanent member of the UN Security Council (UNSC), which provides it the ability of posing veto to any UN decision making process.
Moreover, several attempts of ending the war - such as sanctions and several mediations/negotiations - have already failed.
This leads us to the conclusion that the war between Russia and Ukraine will most probably end when Russia has fulfilled its strategic goals or at least reaches to a solution that does not seem that Russia has "lost" the war.
A possible solution might be the written commitment of the West not to proceed to a NATO enlargement, since it has always been Russia's "red flag", along with a trade cooperation agreement that would help Russia overcome the negative impact of the imposed sanctions.
Dear Professor Tareq Alasadi, the Russia-Ukraine conflict is indeed a complex issue with significant global implications. It is crucial to recognize the importance of resolving this conflict as it affects not only Russia and Ukraine but also has broader consequences for international relations, regional stability, and the global order.
Restoring communication and backdoor diplomatic channels can be a valuable approach to addressing the conflict.
Here are some reasons why this approach is important:
1. De-escalation and Conflict Resolution
2. Preventing Misunderstandings
3. Building Trust and Confidence
4. Exploring Creative Solutions, and
5. International Mediation.
It is important to note that restoring communication and backdoor diplomatic channels is just one aspect of a comprehensive approach to resolving the Russia-Ukraine conflict. It should be complemented by other efforts such as diplomatic pressure, economic sanctions, humanitarian aid, and potentially even peacekeeping missions, depending on the specific circumstances and dynamics of the conflict.
