what can be added and in what concentration to make a 10% fat feed into 30-40% fat feed. I read about Kreamolene but its not available in my country. canola oil and milk powder was also suggested but I am unsure on how to add it to the existing feed which will also be palatable for the rats. Any advice or suggestion will be appreciated
I've used vegetable shortening (Crisco brand) or lard as a palatable source of fat for rats. Simply heat the vegetable shortening or lard in a pan until it is a liquid then stir in the basal diet. Scoop the mixture into feeding jars before it cools and hardens.
Of course, these diets are not just high in fat. They are also high in energy density and lower in the proportion of diet eaten as protein and carbohydrate.
Butter (anhydrous), hydrogenated corn oil and palm oil would be my option. Alternatively, you can get the diet tailored from ResearchDiets. They probably have a chow diet with 40%fat.
