Unfortunately this is something which is beyond your control. Nevertheless, your work will itself speak for you and will itself take-care of your h-index
We know that total number of papers published by an individual may not reflect the quality of his/her scientific activity, while total number of citations can be disproportionately affected because of a single article of major influence. The h-index has been proposed to measure concurrently the quality and quantity of scientific output of researchers, by computing an index based on the highly cited papers of the author and the number of citations these papers have received from other publications.
The h-index gives a measure of the number of articles (h) of an author that have received at least (h) citations up to that time. For instance, an h-index of 6 would mean that an author has 6 articles that have received at least 6 citations each.
As the h-index attempts to measure a researcher's impact over time, the longer a researcher has been publishing, the higher the h-index would be! Naturally, established and veteran researchers have better chance to achieve higher h-indices! The moral: Continue to produce good quality papers, get them published in popular and respected journals, give publicity to your products through friends and social media (including RG!), and wait; your h- index will rise automatically!
Please do not worry for on H-index. Just keep on publishing your paper in the indexed journal. There are other companies they will care for your citations as well as H-index.
Try to publish good quality papers and make sure those are openly available to others. Besides keep citations unbiased. Instead of focusing on number of articles, quality of articles must be given priority. I think, these points can improve h index. However, it should not be tried to improve by rapid and illegal methods; publication of good articles will definitely generate good number of citations thereby improving h index. A slow and steady pace ensures a healthy h index.
As others said, the best way is to publish high quality papers in journals with high impact factor and (increasingly) good or even free access. General technology reviews or similar articles may have high citations numbers and may be cited for several years, while research on one specific feature or aspect will probably not be cited so often.
And remember: h-index is not everything. When applying for higher academic positions, its more other aspects like number of papers, impact factors, first/senior authorship.
Yes, I agree with all the discussion. The best way to increase H-index, need to focus on publishing in a good journal. This journal needs to be according to ISI journal and scopes Elsevier.after publishing in a good journal; you will get cities by the other because you publish in a good journal.
H index is different according to which support you consider.
It is higher with Google Scholar
try Harzings Publish or perish to better use it
https://harzing.com/resources/publish-or-perish
Research Gate gives a h index slightly lower than Google Scholar, because there are less publications referenced in RG.
H index is much lower with SCOPUS, which do not reference most of the books and conferences.
And it is the lowest with ISI Web of Knowledge, because this support only references journals and some conferences and books, and has less journals references than SCOPUS.
THEN IF YOU WANT TO INCREASE YOU H INDEX
two ways :
- increase the number of papers to increase your visibility and the opportunities to be cited
- increase the number of citations of your papers, by increasing their visibility
THUS : Using ResearchGate to valorise your results is the best way to improve your H index
See a short note I wrote about this

H Index is related to the number of citations. Hence, increasing the visibility of your least cited publications to get them cited is a good way of increasing your H index.
The definition of the h-index is that a scholar with an index of h has published h papers each of which has been cited in other papers at least h times.
h-index of a researcher reflects both the number of publications and the number of citations per publication.
Two factors are taken into account for calculating h-index.
(i) The total number of papers published by the author and (ii) the number of citations for each paper.
If you have more numbers of highly impactful publications in Scopus/SCI/web of science indexed journals, citations of your papers in other papers will automatically increase, as a result of which your h-index will improve.
Today it seems easier to publish synthesis review paper, which virtually bring nothing new scientifically speaking except that it put everything about a topic in the same basket, than new results in a case study... Many journals reject case studies as they are supposed to bring mucheck less citations than review papers...
I'm asking if there are simple and reliable methods to improve my h-index It's simple: publish in well-known journals, with an impact factor or a high H index, and publish in world-renowned journals with an impact factor (IF) or an acceptable index H-index
The h-index indicates the number of articles, h, of an author, which has received at least h citations up to that time. For example, an h-index of 10 would mean that an author has published 10 articles, which received at least 10 citations each. If you want to better your h-index, you should be able to publish a greater number of publications in journals with high Impact Factor or CiteScore.
The rules is for publications in indexed journals to improve h index.
Even if we might discuss for long about this system we can not ignore that our administrations want to have such h index and indexed journals visibility to assess our work and judge of our performances...
Publish high quality research paper in the very good impact factor journals, if possible open access publication. Automatically you will get more citations and h index will improve. It will take long item.
I regret that this is not sufficient to publish high quality paperd dear Colleague Ali_AL-HOMAIDAN
It is necessary to publish them in journal indexed by Web of Knowledge or SCOPUS as they are the two indexation sites that are recognized by our ministries in many countries
Publishing survey paper is also a way to get a lot of citations in related work sections. I am not suggesting to do it, unless you think you can produce a very helpful and commented survey.
I believe that citation is the key factor to advance h-index. It relates to your citation track, if it increased, the h- index of that article would increase. Then, in order to advance your h-index, you want to have extra citations.
Frequent use if RG possibilities can help in increasing the dissemination of your results and papers. This in turn can help in increasing the number of citations to you work, and eventuallt increase your h index. But questions and answer only very poorly contribute to increasing h index.
A frequently used trick to increase your h index: publish papers with a lot of co-authors (20 or 30 why not?). Thus all of them can cite the paper and the number of citation will quickly increase...
The h-index would be difficult to improve, but your personal h-index can be increased by increasing the number of Publications that will attract Citations.
