Use RPMI 1640 with 5% FBS plus 1% Glutamine and antibiotics. The doubling time of A549 is approx 24 h in this medium as we observe in our assays.

 at fist use RPMI 1640  with 20% FBS until cells will be come better then decrease FBS TO 10%

I use DMEM high glucose (Sigma's) with antibiotics and 10% FBS. A549 grow rather fast in it. Good luck!
