The sun is observed by an instrument called solar telescope which is supplied by optical filters such that one can observe the image of the surface of the sun by the eyes: https://www.skyandtelescope.com/astronomy-news/how-to-look-at-the-sun/

My wife uses a nifty device called SunSpotter when teaching astronomy classes. Cool little device for when you absolutely must have a live image for the wow factor.
The solar atmosphere consists of three layers Photosphere, Chromosphere, and Corona, we always can observe photosphere, while can observe Chromosphere and corona during total solar eclipse only. To can observe the details of solar photosphere you need a solar telescope and solar filter with a digital camera, if you need to observe solar chromosphere you must use H-Alpha filter.
