I want to know about the correct method to find out the residual stresses in the carbon fibre reinforced composites. The literature says that XRD can get residual stresses. However, few papers I read says it is not correct. Can you please help me with this. Thank you

I found that the abstract of the published work by the R. Meske and E. Schnack indicates clearly the challenges to obtain high level of stress calculation results which is mainly the influence of measurement errors which should be investigated closely .

i am not sure about XRD. But you can Find out residual stresses in the specimen by EBSD analysis.

Thank you, Sir ( Sergey Mamedov ), I have gone through a few papers regarding raman spectroscopy. Though we can find the residual stresses in carbon composite by this method. These are on the basis of shifts. But, how we will verify whether the results are up to mark or not. with what we should compare the results. Please if possible do let me know. Thank you

It is difficult for XRD to measure residual stresses without metallic inclusions because neither the carbon fibers nor the resin matrix give suitable high angle Bragg reflection.

As Dr Mamedov has suggested, I think you can try Raman spectroscopy. If can get hold of a standard sample with no residual stress or known residual stress, you can do it confidently.

If your carbon fibre reinforced composite is having metallic or ceramic matrix (say carbon fibre reinforced SiC ceramic matrix composite), then it is possible to measure the residual stress on the matrix material.
We have done that on carbon fibre reinforced SiC CMC.
I gave a talk in 2009 at Microscopy and Microanalysis conference about carbon composite that covers the topic of changes in a structure on the distance from the hot zone. I studied fiber cross-section, fiber surface, and longitudinal interior, matrix carbon. They are ultimately related to fracture failure to physical/mechanical properties that correlate with Raman spectra. I may give a pdf file with information if you wish.
