Graphene oxide has carboxyl groups. Therefore, to improve the bonding of the substrate with GO, you use polyethylene sulfide. The sulfide group has weak basic properties (Lewis base). To improve the basic properties, it is better to use polymers with a nitrogen functional group.

I have been following published methods that utilize polyethersulfone (PES) substrates without the use of a cross-linker. However, I am encountering an issue where the GO layer peels off when I try to evaluate its desalination performance. According to the literature, researchers were able to produce freestanding GO membranes, but I have not been able to achieve the same result.

You can deposit GO by vacuum-assisted filtration on a PTFE or PVDF filter and peel it off. It should be a couple of microns in thickness to be strong enough to handle.
