I am using Abaqus to build a beam which cross-section is varying along the length of the beam, and I am trying to find out whether there are any differences between exploiting symmetries and not exploiting symmetries.

basically using of symmetry boundary conditions has two advantages:
1) It decreases the number of elements, wich in turn decreases the simulation time.
2) It increases the stability of the model.
So, if the question wether to use symmetry BC or not, than the answer is yes.
(Ofcourse, you should be confident to which plane you upply the symmetry.)

Apart from symmetry BC, I saw that in the "step" of Abaqus, there is a tab call "equation solver", and in this tab we can choose to use "symmetric equation solver" and "unsymmetric equation solver". Does it make any difference when considering exploiting symmetries?
