Inspection of road condition is very important to maintain roads. If the traffic volume is very high, say 150,000 vehicles per day, then inspection & carrying out maintenance work during night time under traffic control is required. On the other hand, if the traffic volume is 500 vehicles per day, then we can close one lane under traffic control and carry out maintenance activities. Whole-of life costing is important when rehabilitating the road pavement. Concrete pavements are preferred for highly-trafficked roads and it lasts 40 years if designed & maintained properly. Granular pavement is fine for low trafficked roads. Routine & periodic maintenance is normally carried out on each roads. Road asset register, condition reports, costing, intervention levels etc are part of road management. If there is congestion building up, then traffic modelling is required for planning either to widen the road or build a bypass. Forecasting traffic volume, reviewing pavement thickness, considering alternative modes such as public transport, cycling, walking, teleworking etc are part of ongoing planning.
