I want to scale a process from lab scale to production scale and maintain similar shear.

Current process:

A fluid in a 1.5" tri-clamp spool is exposed to shear by passing a loose fitting piston through the fluid at a fixed velocity.

  • Tri-clamp ID 1.375"
  • Piston OD 1.125"
  • Piston speed 3 inch/sec

I need to duplicate the shear experienced by the fluid in the current 1.5" spool in a scaled process using a 12" tri-clamp spool (ID 11.73"). Piston velocity has to remain the same at 3 inch/sec.

Is there a way to determine a piston OD that will provide the same shear in a 12" spool?

I know there are a lot of ways to shear a liquid but I need to do it this way.

Thank you
