i have done modal analysis and transient analysis in ANSYS Workbench but how can i do transient analysis using results obtained in modal analysis and how does no of modes affect solution of Transient Analysis?
Please help me with this problem.
First create the model for the modal analysis. After that, in Workbench main window you can simply drag and drop a new "Transient structural" analysis on the "solution" (or "setup"? not sure right now) part of the modal analysis. Ansys will automatically couple the models such that it uses only the modes obtained in the modal analysis to do the transient analysis.

1st part of your question is already addressed by Dr. Gravenkamp. With respect to number of modes, make sure your 'effective mass to total mass ratio' is more than 80%. I would expect this to be a good start. Google 'Modal mass participation'.

At least 100 modes is a good start if you want meaningful results to compare to measured results such as FFT
