I have a scenario in which I need to do crack initiation & propagation study . Based on the load which is applied on the component, crack needs to be initiated . Once it is initiated, the same crack needs to be propagate if the external loads applied continuously . How to simulate this scenario using ABAQUS?

The crack propagation capability must be activated within the step definition to specify that crack propagation may occur between the two surfaces that are initially partially bonded. You specify the surfaces along which the crack propagates.switich control+space on abaquus and fit your data there. Window will come, define the crack, crack front and do stepwise I suggest.
1. The crack front may be selected. Contour integrals, such as the J-integral that you need to calculate here, calculated for layers of elements around the crack.
2. After the location of the crack is defined, the crack extension direction is specified, either as normal to the crack plane or by specifying q vectors.
3. Symmetry In the ‘edit crack’ window that opens when the q vector is defined, there is an option to specify that the crack is on a symmetry plane. If this option is used, no seam needs to be defined. Instead, no symmetry boundary conditions are applied where the crack is located, allowing it to open.
4. Defining the rest of the simulation- Of course just specifying a crack does not allow us to run a simulation. Material properties, loads and boundary conditions need to be applied as well. In this case, linear elastic steel is used and the gear is fully constrained in the centre, while a force is applied to separate both teeth and open the crack.
