I have some cases of abortion in late pregnant ewes and others are still birth, some of them suffer from arthritis, I am thinking about chlamydial abortion could you tell me what are the most characteristic gross and post-mortem lesions in the dead foetuses caused by Chlamydia?

1.The placenta is the specimen of choice, but sometimes the diagnosis can be made by testing liver, lung, and spleen.
2.Microscopically, necrotizing vasculitis and neutrophilic inflammation are present in the placenta. Chlamydial organisms can be visualized in appropriately stained placental smears.
3.Fluorescent antibody or immunohistochemical staining, ELISA, PCR, or culture can be used to definitively identify C abortus.

Thank you for your helpful comments. I did post-mortem examination of the dead feti, there were ascites, serosanguinous fluid around heart, congested liver and kidneys with marked autolysis in one fetus while the organs of the other one showed more congested liver and kidneys with less degree of autolysis.
Fortunately, I have smear from the placenta and the abomasum and I will try check these smear as you recommended.

To add to the comments above, 1.It is fairly common practice to inject all the pregnant ewes that are left with long acting tetracycline immediately. This "in the face of an outbreak" treatment is surprisingly effective. The ewes must be handled with care , use sterile needles new antibiotic etc 2. It is a zoonosis that is quite efficient at spreading . Thought must be given if any women of child bearing age are involved in any way. https://www.gov.uk/guidance/chlamydophila-abortus
Thank you so much Dr. Richard, we administrated long-acting antibiotic in addition to anti-inflammatory and anti-pyritic just after abortion.

just on the basis of culture we can not diagnose chlamydia as brucella and Coxiella have also simillar cultural characteristics so for confirmative diagnosis PCR is required
