if the guy who is developing this stratigraphic model don't have seismic and well data but he is only using outcrop samples...will that be helpful or in that case what ll be the techniques that should be followed. Its the limitation that he has only outcrop data, (Rock Samples).
As mentioned by Dow (1994) a petroleum system includes a mature source rock, reservoir rock, cap rock, and overburden rock. In addition, it includes the processes such as stratigraphic or structural trap formation and the generation-migration-accumulation of petroleum. In order for petroleum accumulation to be present, all required elements and processes should be within a specific time and place (Magoon and Dow, 1994).
Therefore; your friend can obtain general idea about elements of petroleum system such as prospected source rock, reservoir rock, cap rock, stratigraphic distribution, isopach map, structure ma, and etc for entire area.
But still he has to get seismic line to detect trap in order to get complete petroleum system model after connecting all components to time-temperature. In summary there is no way to draw any model by depending only on outcrop data.
