I got a chromatogram after passing an oil sample from GC-MS, I am starter in geochemistry thats why I need some assistance and steps for analyzing chromatogram. My ultimate research work is oil-oil correlation of different wells.

have you tried a library search to ID the peaks? do you have a decent separation of the peaks? search literature available on the internet- web of science, sciencedirect, etc. to get more information...this is what I came across first:

Actually I have a lot of literature but the problem is that I have run the GC-MS and now I got a chromatogram and I can't figure out how and from where to start to analyze this chromatogram. I want the steps which should be followed to analyze the chromatograms. Anyway thanks a lot for your good response and for the publication.
The identification peak by peak could be really long ... especially for a crude oil. Furthermore it depends what are u searching for ? Biomarkers..? Which carbon cut are u interested in C6-15, C15+ ? I think you could some reference chromatogram of "classic oil" , which gives u per carbon number which naphthene/ iso-alkanes/n-alkanes or aromatic. I would also inject in your GC MS tampon solution which a mixture of n-alkanes to calibrate your sample chromatogram by carbon number as a first step.

I can help after you respond to my questions because I want to know your background in order to determine the start point.
If you have access to the digital data, extract the ion chromatograms (mass/charge 191 and 217). These will give you "fragmentograms" of the terpanes and steranes respectively. Otherwise see if the people who ran the sample can extract this data and print out the traces for you. These ion chromatograms can then be compared to the many examples found in the "Biomarker Guide" by Peters et al "2005" where identifications are provided. Peters et al (2005) discuss at length the various factors that affect the distribution of compounds found in these ion traces. Thus presence or absence of certain compounds can be indicative of source facies as well as the thermal history experienced by the sample.

Actually I read so many papers regarding biomarkers and correlation of oil-oil but the practical is sth else thats why I was facing the problem.
Majid, w/out a library is difficult to ID peaks and this is never an easy task; here is what I would do: run a standard oil mixture (using the same method), if there is one available to buy and compare to what you have- standards are the key to start an unknown analysis; use an internal standard as well; also there are many web based organizations who offer webinars, give it a try...what I am doing now is run individual analytes and build my own library...
Dear Majid- I agree with the previous answers. What I suggest for you now, go ahead and let someone identify peaks for you and show you how to use software. Then, start to interpret your data based on classic principles. You compare the results with any published paper to obtain general idea about depositional environments, maturity of oils, ages, classification of oils, oil-oil correlation, and oil-source correlation. Last, you can expand your interpretation and build on what the others done earlier.

I can give you a crude Econophysical String Theoretic Method based on viscocity. Just take along pipette sample and run the sample in a test centrifuge, you will be able to analyse number of effective layers first visually and then mechanically. I can explain the Physics behind it but you can take a look at one of our papers Mallick(2014, 2016), Mallick, Hamburger, Mallick (2016 working notes) also has some of the particle and material science. This is a result of the "graviton" Dbranes String group Homology with phonons and electrons.

I agree with Crisiena, the first step you start with the ChemStation library to identify some of the peaks based on the fragmentation patterns. Most of the ChemStation libraries and mainly Wiley have all the major crude oil compound fragmentations. You may ask the GCMS supervisor to show you how to use the library. You may also need to use standards (e.g. n-alkanes, hopane and/or sterane biomarkers), if the GCMS library lacks the fragmentations of these compounds to match the retention time as well as the fragmentations of your sample peaks.

Petroleum samples are very complex ones and will yield many number of peaks in the TIC. I totally agree with Cristina that without a library peak identification in these types of complex samples will be very very difficult. Excellent libraries are available for GCMS and you can use one for your vsamplkes.
