I am working on a bullet impact ( 80e3 mm/s) onto a 2 mm thick Al plate. I have used the units tonne, mm N, s. But the job always aborts saying there are excessively distorted elements. I tried refining the mesh at the impact zone, but still the problem persists.
1. Try using explicit analysis instead of standard.
2. You need to use element deletion criteria for removing distorted elements, there's no other way around it.
3. With respect to step time calculation, I am assuming you mean the stable time increment? If yes, then using explicit you wouldn't have to worry about it since it's calculated automatically.
4. Lastly, ensure that units are consistent.
