I am trying to simulate a bullet impact into Aluminum-1100 plate which is 5mm thick. The conical bullet's velocity is 375 m/s and I modeled it as a rigid body. I am not sure what value for the 'Displacement at failure' under 'Damage Evolution' should be given for this Aluminum-1100 alloy.
Aluminum 1100 is an extremely ductile (pure) metal.
When impacted by a rigid conical projectile it will deform and a crater is formed to allow the projectile to perforate the plate. As the metal only experiences compressive stress, there will not be any failure or damage of the metal. So, in my view it does not matter what settings you use, the metal will not fail....(only plastically deform)
Thank you for the answer Erik. But, in my simulation, a hole was formed nevertheless. The problem is, a realistic impact wherein the metal plastically bulges on the other side, is not observed. I'm not sure of the damage evolution parameter - be it fracture energy or displacement at failure.
The forming of a hole is by plastic deformation (which consumes energy Y e Vol, with Y the flow stress, e the plastic strain and Vol the volume of deformed material).
In my view, failure is the forming of a crack (two new surfaces). But this does not occur in ductile material penetration by a sharp projectile.
If you have simple tensile test result of Aluminum-1100 plate, 'displacement at failure' can be calculated. Read the answer here to get more intuition,
